A sonic missive from Troon
I’ll be writing a wee essay about being in Troon this time (some odd memories resurface), but the one-hour show which went out on 60 North Radio this evening (Friday) was put together here, in the wee flat we have as our mainland bolthole. The weather has been, on the whole, rather lovely, and grandchildren, or a few of them, have been entertained. though I’d forgotten that a fine-grained beach on a windy day means you get sand in your teeth.
The news about Gordon Lightfoot’s death reminded me of the scene in Martin Scorsese’s film of Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue, where Joni Mitchell performs a version of her song Coyote in Gordon Lightfoot’s lounge, watched by luminaries such as Roger McGuinn and Dylan himself (about whom the song is purported to have been written). She leaves the assembled superstars truly gobsmacked.
So Coyote is in the show, along with Dylan doing Early Morning Rain and Lightfoot’s own The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Not included is Negotiations, which “Gordie” Lightfoot released as a single in 1961, and I acquired four years later when it was a deleted, ex-jukebox single for sale in a Troon newsagents. One of the first singles I ever bought.
