My Best Temporary Friend

Please be understanding and careful with this.

It’s a rough sketch of a performance, needless to say with no artificial intelligence involved. There are a few stumbles and buzzes, but to be honest it’s likely I’ll never sing this song again.

Also, the song will be upsetting for anyone who’s either lost a pet or maybe even who has a dog (or possibly, a very advanced cat) and knows that, as the song says, they are likely to go first.

Dexter, rescue Staffie/Collie cross. Best of dogs

My Best Temporary Friend

Lost balls rolled under settees

Getting them is just too tough for me

You could be hard to control

I’m still scraping scraps into your bowl

Keeping you fed

Patting your head…

Every dog should have its day

I’m just happy that you stayed

For very nearly 15 years

Even the postman was in tears

Despite your tendency to chew

A delivery or two

My best temporary friend

Always first to reach the end

When all is done and all is said

My dog’s dead

Nothing wakes me up now for a walk

I don’t pretend that you can talk

Beaches too empty, fields lack sheep

Can’t  hear you barking in your sleep

In your dreams, where did you go?

I’ll never know

My best temporary friend

Always first to reach the end

When all is done and all is said

My dog’s dead

You fought the good fight now and then

That pit bull never growled again

Your toilet habits were discreet

You loved every child you’d meet

They could pull your tail and ears

Without fear

My heart is sore, I can’t repair it

My dog’s dead and I can’t bear it

But life goes on and that’s a fact

The little bastard won’t come back

He’s gone somewhere up ahead

My dog’s dead

My best temporary friend

Always first to reach the end

When all is done and all is said

  1. the comma in the story of a longer life…

  2. A Big Big Loss. So sorry. Been there. Not everyone understands – their loss. Great song, but one you’d rather not have had to write. Also been there.

  3. Such a nice tribute/memories.

“nothing wakes me up now for a walk” got me. Mine would simply walk over to me and bump me on the leg or arm when she wanted to go out. No barking, just a gentle nose touch.

  4. Beautifully conceived Tom…

What a moving song. I haven’t had a dog since I was young – spoiled a couple of my Dad’s sheepdogs! But I can identify with that sense of loss. I felt the same when my cat died. The unqualified love and friendship of an animal is an amazing thing.

  6. A sweet remembrance to your beloved boy. Thanks for the tune Tom and your broken open heart. Wishing you and yours gentle ease.
